I have just arrived back from a wonderful holiday in Vienna, Austria with my grandparents. I had a great time, and I want to share my top five things to see and do (in no particular order)...
1. Schönbrunn
I had a brilliant time in this palace. We took the Imperial Tour, which allowed us to walk around twenty amazing rooms while listening to audio guides. The other option was a tour of forty rooms, which seemed too many. I loved walking round the rooms because the facts were interesting and it was very cool to see how elaborately furnished they were. My favourite room was the exquisite Grand Hall. I especially liked the massive chandeliers dangling down from the ceiling. The food was delicious too. I had some small pizza-like things with tomato sauce, spinach and cheese that were divine. My grandparents also had a delicious-looking salad. The dining area was really nice and it contained lots of things to look at.
2. Horse Carriage Ride
I adored the horse carriage ride which we got from just outside the Schatzkammer . The person who controlled the horses was a bit grumpy, but I didn't mind because it was a really cool experience. The pearl-white horses we went on were extremely cute and it was amazing to see the sights of Vienna this way! We passed the government, the town hall and the Hofburg on our trip.
3. Schatzkammer
The Schatzkammer is the treasury for some of the most precious things in Vienna and from the Habsburg Empire. My favourite thing was the Viennese Crown and I also liked a tree with people carved into the gems. The museum is full of paintings and very religious exhibits. The museum was quite dark and you could only take pictures without the flash which meant the pictures we took weren't good. However, this added to the atmosphere.
4. The Belvedere
The Belvedere is like no normal art gallery. Unlike most (which completely bore me) the Beldevere is full of artwork that I loved from the first sight. One example of this was "The Kiss" by Gustav Klimt that I spent a good five minutes gazing at. There was a lot of art by Klimt there, and he is now one of my favourite artists. I also like the realism and impressionism paintings, as we studied them at school this year. We also ate at the Belvedere, where I had a yummy tomato and mozzarella salad. The service wasn't great but the food was amazing and it was worth the wait.
5. The Viennese Wheel!
I really loved the Viennese wheel. Unfortunately, it was rainy and windy when I was up there, but it didn't stop me from having a great time and seeing incredible sights. Before we went on the wheel, we walked around a room with paintings on the walls about the history of Vienna. There were also miniature wheel capsules with little sets in that told the story. I had a great time and we managed to take some really good pictures. Afterwards, we had lunch at the Prater (the amusement park) and I had no complaints. You can't go wrong with delicious pasta and a brilliant ice-cream.Labels: Austria, Blog, Europe
